“You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
We all take great effort to be careful when we borrow something from a friend or loved one. Personally I will often try to return it in better shape than when I received it if possible. Special treatment and extreme care is also given to any gift that has a significant meaning such as a family heirloom, engagement ring, or many other items that we hold in high regard.
However, what gift can possibly be more valuable than our soul and the body which allows us to experience life as we know it?
Unfortunately many of us take our bodies for granted and don’t put as much thought into how we treat it as we do with many material items. We lack the connection that our bodies were made by the Lord and that we should treat them with the respect that they so deserve.
“You don’t a have soul. You are a soul. You have a body” C.S. Lewis
This is a great quote from CS Lewis which reminds us that it is our soul which truly makes us who we are and that will be with us in our next life. This is not to say that our bodies are not important but rather that we are stewards who have been entrusted with these incredible vessels. We must take care of our bodies, treat them with respect, and be thankful for each day we are able to fill our lungs to take another breath.
Running is obviously one great way to help us lose weight, improve our health, clear our minds, and much more. However, I doubt many of us think about it as a way to honor the Lord. I believe we would be more likely to stick to our plans and achieve our goals if we did. It makes good sense that the greater and more meaningful the reason we have to eat right, exercise regularly, and pray daily, the more successful we will have in our efforts to praise God for his amazing creation.
