Do you find yourself flossing your teeth before you visit the dentist even though you may rarely do so? Have you ever slowed down considerably after passing a cop on the road? There are so many things we know we should or shouldn’t do but wait for the wrong reasons to do them.
Most people know the importance of stretching and I hope all of you who exercise, regardless of how frequently, take the time to stretch the muscles you work. I realize there is much debate about stretching -Does it really help you? Do I do it before or after? What type do I do – static, active, isometric… and on and on.
I am not sure I know the perfect answer but I do know that almost everyone will agree that for many injuries, stretching is almost always part of rehabilitation. Stretching has been shown to improve blood flow to the muscles and help with flexibility. Even though we know we should be stretching regularly, so many of us unfortunately wait until after we are injured…. and even then it does not become part of our workout routine.
Prayer is no different. We know as Christians we should be praying regularly whether it is before meals, before bed, and not just on Sundays. Unfortunately many do not do pray until significant or an unfortunate event occurs in our lives. Unlike stretching, the reasons to pray and benefits are beyond the scope of this e-mail. However I do know it helps me in my faith, in my relationship with the Lord, in guiding me in my life, and in helping others.
Those are 2 clear examples of things we know are good for us yet many of us wait for our bodies or spirits to be compromised before we begin doing them regularly. We all have busy schedules but let us take the time to care for the body and spirit we all have been blessed with.
So don’t wait any longer! Don’t wait until Sunday to pray, to be injured to stretch, or for any of the reasons that may be stopping you from joining us for our next run!
